Occasionally we pick up a splinter, thorn or even worse a piece of glass in the foot. It can remain a source of irritation and sometimes infection, until it is cleared.
The body has the ability to get rid of small foreign bodies, but larger deeper ones may be painful in certain positions.
An X-ray may be necessary to locate the foreign body, and minor surgical excision may be necessary depending on the depth and locality.
Shallower bodies can be removed by paring the epidermis down with a scalpel then getting hold of the splinter with tweezers.
